In Assam’s Dessoi Valley Reserve Forest, tree trunks were marked with inscriptions like “NLM” and “AKM”, disclosing a tactic of staking land-claims. Stamping the names of neighbouring state entities on barks was an attempt to assert control over forest territory in this fusional act of vegetation and boundary-making.
