A significant campaign saw farmers sow banned seeds of genetically modified crops in open protest, planting unapproved varieties of brinjal and cotton to challenge the government’s restrictions. Thousands gathered under the leadership of a farmers’ body, staging what they termed a “satyagraha” by raising compost into rice rows, in defiance of the ban and symbolising their demand for freedom to access biotech seeds.
