In Bengaluru’s Sarjapur–Attibele corridor, residents linked arms around the city’s remaining trees, forming a human chain in opposition to the cutting of nearly 1,800 trees for road widening. Many of the trees, such as the banyan tree, were ancient and deeply embedded in the local ecology, but the project proceeded despite widespread concern over green cover loss and degraded water tables. As guardians of the 1800 trees, Bangalore residents stood in front of a 100 year old banyan tree.
