Vegetable growers uprooted their tomato plants and dumped the produce on roads as prices collapsed during the COVID-19 lockdown, with tomatoes selling for just ₹1–₹2 per kilogram. The closure of hotels, restaurants, and wholesale markets left them unable to recover costs, prompting large-scale demonstrations in districts such as Sehore and Vidisha. Farmers blocked roads with their discarded harvests to demand compensation and a guaranteed minimum support price.
