In Goa, residents hugged coconut trees to protest a government bill that reclassified the coconut tree as a palm instead of a tree. Locals feared the change would weaken environmental protections and allow large-scale deforestation and real-estate development. The act of embracing the trees expressed people's resistance to policies threatening Goa’s ecological heritage.
