Cook rice gruel on roadsides
|
November 2011
Handloom weavers staged a protest by cooking and eating rice gruel on the roadside to draw attention to their loss of livelihood. The demonstrators said they were struggling to survive after the government stopped providing orders for weaving, and delayed payments under welfare schemes. Preparing the simple meal in public symbolized the hardship and hunger the traditional weaving community was facing due to unemployment and falling incomes.
