Hundreds of farmers sowed the FL-2027 potato variety—registered by PepsiCo for its Lay’s chips—in defiance of the company’s intellectual property claim. The coordinated protest spanned more than ten districts and was organised by the farmers’ group BKS (Bhartiya Kisan Sangh) after PepsiCo had earlier filed lawsuits against growers for allegedly infringing on its seed patent. By planting the same variety publicly and collectively, farmers asserted their traditional right to save, reuse, and exchange seeds under India’s Protection of Plant Varieties and Farmers’ Rights Act (2001).
