Dump papayas on farmland
|
June 2020
A farmer ploughed under and destroyed his papaya and banana plantations across 50 acres after failing to find buyers during the COVID-19 lockdown. He said his crop of 25 acres each of papaya and bananas yielded 150 tonnes of fruit that went unsold, and local traders offered barely ₹2–2.50/kg which didn’t cover labour or production costs. Distressed by mounting losses and crop spoilage, he stated that harvesting had become unviable, so he decided to destroy the crop and prepare the land for the next season.
