In 2013, cardamom farmers from several panchayats in Idukki district gathered outside the Spices Board office in Palarivattom, Kochi and dumped sacks of their produce on the ground. The act came in response to collapsing market prices and the government’s failure to protect local growers from cheap imports. They demanded higher import duties and a fixed minimum support price to stabilise incomes.
