In Kashmir’s apple-growing region, farmers left their ripe fruit unharvested and hanging on the trees as a deliberate act of resistance. With transport links cut and communications blocked after the government revoked the area’s special status, growers saw harvesting as legitimising a return to “normalcy” under the Indian state. To avoid that, the apples were left to rot.
