Protesters in Myanmar stuck handwritten messages into watermelons during the 2021 anti-coup movement, using the fruit as a surface to hold small notes and slogans that addressed the military takeover. The melons were set out in public locations where the messages could be seen by passers-by, turning an everyday object into a creative display of dissent. Photographs of these watermelon message installations circulated widely, highlighting the inventive forms of protest emerging across the country.
