In 2019, farmworkers from the Coalition of Immokalee Workers marched with large tomato cutouts during protests targeting Wendy’s, urging the fast-food chain to join the Fair Food Program. The workers, many of whom harvest tomatoes in Florida, accused Wendy’s of refusing to commit to a program that enforces higher labor standards and prevents abuses such as wage theft, poor working conditions, and sexual harassment in the fields. Their cross-country demonstrations, featuring the symbolic tomato signs, aimed to pressure the company to adopt stronger human-rights protections within its supply chain.
