Carry giant replicas of lilies
Taipei, Taiwan

March 1990
During Taiwan’s 1990 Wild Lily Student Movement, thousands of students gathered at Taipei’s Liberty Square to demand democratic reforms, including direct presidential elections and the dissolution of the old National Assembly. Many participants carried giant replicas of white lilies, amplifying the flower’s symbolism of purity and peaceful political change. The mass sit-in, sustained over several days, gained national attention and ultimately prompted President Lee Teng-hui to promise sweeping democratic reforms, marking a pivotal moment in Taiwan’s transition toward full democracy.
