March with corn installations
Mexico city, Mexico
|
January 2002
In January 2008, Mexican farmers took part in a march of hundreds of corn producers in Mexico City, protesting against the NAFTA (North American Free Trade Agreement). NAFTA accelerated the loss of small-scale farming by allowing heavily subsidised U.S. agricultural products—especially corn—to overwhelm Mexican markets. As a result, rural farmers faced collapsing prices and shrinking incomes, pushing many to migrate to cities or the United States. The protest voiced opposition to the domestic removal of import tariffs on agricultural goods from the U.S. and Canada as set by (NAFTA). The farmers called on the government to renegotiate trade terms and protect their livelihoods from the effects of trade liberalization.
