Protesters in Myanmar laid shoes with flowers on roads and in public spaces during April 2021 as part of a “marching shoe strike,” a symbolic act to honor those killed since the military coup. They arranged shoes—many empty or filled with blooms—and placed them at protest locations or at homes, with organizers declaring that “for every step, a flower blooms.” These displays appeared in cities including Yangon, Mandalay and Taunggyi, turning the shoe into a memorial object of absence and dissent, and their images spread through social media to amplify the message of resistance.
