Farmers in the south of France protested new European Union chemical-regulation rules by placing billboards in their lavender fields with slogans like “Lavender is not a chemical”. The regulations would require lavender oil products—worth over €100 per kilogram in the region—to be labelled and treated like industrial chemicals due to allergy concerns, a change growers say threatens their livelihoods and the region’s iconic lavender industry.
