In the aftermath of the deadly Halloween crowd crush in Seoul’s Itaewon district, mourners converged in the capital carrying white chrysanthemums—symbols of grief in South Korea—and black placards demanding accountability from the government. These silent vigils took place near City Hall and other public spaces, where thousands of participants, many of them young, gathered as both an act of remembrance and protest. The contrasting imagery of the flowers and placards captured the public’s sorrow and anger toward what they perceived as institutional failure.
