Stab and squeeze oranges in anger

Izmit, Turkey

March 2017

In March 2017, during a diplomatic standoff between Turkey and the Netherlands, protesters in Izmit, Turkey, stabbed and squeezed oranges—and drank their juice on camera—as a symbolic demonstration directed at the Netherlands. The colour orange is historically linked to the Dutch royal family and the Netherlands, and the action followed decisions by Dutch authorities to block Turkish ministers from holding rallies. The protest aimed to send a pointed message of retaliation while capturing social-media attention through the visually unusual gesture.
