Wear corn costumes

Madrid, Spain

September 2009

In September 2009, Friends of the Earth staged a playful protest at the French Embassy in Spain in which activists wore corn costumes and symbolically delivered “non-GMO corn” seeking “agricultural asylum” in France. The action highlighted concerns over the widespread cultivation of genetically modified Bt maize in Spain—then the EU’s largest adopter of the crop—versus France’s ban on MON-810 due to environmental and ecological risks. Through the theatrics of corn fleeing across borders, the protest drew attention to the contradictions between national regulations that treat plants like political subjects and the biological reality that pollen and species movement ignore human-made borders.
